The idea of this team is for you to learn to deepen your sense of timing and rhythm by learning to actually play the different percussion rhythms. Jesús La Rosa Pérez is not only a highly experienced dance teacher, he is also a professional musician and educator.

For any salsa, son, or rumba dancer, understanding the music’s rhythms on a deeper level is key to becoming a more connected and expressive dancer. Learning to play the different percussion instruments—such as the conga, bongos, timbales, and clave—allows you to experience the heartbeat of the music firsthand. These instruments lay the foundation for every movement on the dance floor, and by learning to play them, you internalize the rhythms in a way that strengthens your musicality, timing, and ability to interpret the music with your body.

When you understand the structure of salsa, son, cha-cha-cha, and rumba rhythms, you can anticipate changes in the music, allowing you to react with precision and confidence during both partner work and footwork also on the social dance floor. You’ll also develop a deeper connection to the roots of these dance forms, gaining a richer appreciation for their cultural context. As a dancer, feeling the music from the perspective of a musician empowers you to move with more intention, syncopation, and creative flair.
